2015 Ferrari 488 GTB

2015 Ferrari 488 GTB

The replacement for the Ferrari 458 has been unveiled. Forty years on from its first ever mid-rear-engined V8 model, the 308 GTB, the Ferrari 488 GTB will go into production in the last quarter of this year.

This new GTB will be equipped with a turbo charger like the latest Ferrari  the California T convertible.

The new Ferrari 488 GTB

Ferrari 488 GTB

The new berlinetta brilliantly encapsulates Ferrari’s experience in both F1 and the WEC, where the 458 GT holds the World Championship title and has won its category in the last two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new model also exploits to the full the know-how gleaned by Ferrari technicians over the last decade through the XX programme which makes extreme track-only cars available to gentleman test-drivers. The data yielded has made a significant contribution to the refinement of the electronic and vehicle control systems so that drivers can make the most of the incredible performance of this new car.

Ferrari 488 GTB turbo charged engine

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s new 3902 cc V8 turbo is at the top of its class for power output, torque and response times, making it the new benchmark for this kind of architecture. The engine unleashes 670 cv at 8,000 rpm along with 760 Nm of maximum torque in seventh gear and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds at 2,000 rpm. These figures are sufficient to allow the Ferrari 488 GTB to accelerate from 0-200 km/h in an astonishing 8.3 seconds and, when combined with the radical innovations introduced on all aspects of the car’s performance, lap the Fiorano track in just 1’23”.

The gearbox features Variable Torque Management which unleashes the engine’s massive torque smoothly and powerfully right across the rev range, while specific gear ratios deliver incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle. As is always the case, Ferrari’s engineers have dedicated great attention to perfecting the 488 GTB’s sound, creating a new soundtrack that is full, clear and totally distinctive, as expected from any Prancing Horse engine.

The car’s aerodynamics also made a pivotal contribution to performance: its 1.67 efficiency figure is a new record for a production Ferrari, and is the fruit of 50 per cent more downforce than the previous model and reduced drag. The greatest challenge was achieving these two goals simultaneously. Several innovative elements were specifically developed to do so, not least a double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes and, at the rear, active aerodynamics coupled with a blown spoiler. The aerodynamic underbody, which incorporates vortex generators, is highly sophisticated, too.

Ferrari 488

The Ferrari 488 GTB’s subsystems and electronic controls make its power and performance instantly available and controllable. It is, in fact, the most responsive production model there is, with razor-sharp response times comparable to those of a track car.

The evolved version of Ferrari’s side slip angle control system (Side Slip Control 2 – SSC2) is more precise and less invasive, providing greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. Aside from integrating with car’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, the SSC2 now also controls the active dampers which renders the car’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable.

Ferrari 488 GTB side

Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new car features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. Its large signature air intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter. The wide front spoiler features a double profile to improve the thermal efficiency of the radiators positioned at the sides. At the centre two pylons are combined with a deflector which channels air towards the flat underbody. The broad, low tail is also dominated by aerodynamic solutions, including an innovative blown spoiler which generates downforce without increasing drag. This works in conjunction with an aggressive ramp angle for the diffuser which features active flaps. The greater height required for the diffuser was achieved by repositioning the exhaust tailpipes. The circular LED tail lights have also been redesigned.

Ferrari 488 GTB interior

In the cabin, the seamless integration of the new satellite control clusters, angled air vents and instrument panel heightens the sense that the cockpit is completely tailored around the driver. Usability was the key word in the design, leading to an extremely sporty ambience that in no way compromises on comfort. There are plenty of classic Ferrari styling elements too, such as the clear separation between the dashboard and tunnel, the multifunctional steering wheel, the control switch bridge and wraparound seats. The graphics and interface of the infotainment screen have also been completely redesigned while the design of the car’s new key takes its inspiration from the car’s cylinder banks and allows keyless starts.

The Ferrari 488 GTB will make its world debut at the International Geneva Motor Show in March.

Gordon Ramsay approves of the fast food at Ferrari

Gordon Ramsay approves of the fast food at Ferrari

It was full marks for the fast food chefs at the Ferrari factory restaurant after Gordon Ramsay paid a visit today!

The famous British Chef, who has been a Ferrari owner for many years, finally got the chance to visit the Ferrari plant in Maranello. It was a special day for Ramsay, who went around all the production facilities and was truly impressed by the working environment in Ferrari.

“You can feel the passion of the people working here –  it’s incredible, I couldn’t imagine such a place: bellissimo”.

Ferrari’s employees could not believe their eyes either, and warmly welcomed Gordon asking for autographs and photos.

The taste test started at 12.30 (before the road test!). While visiting il Podio, Ferrari’s company restaurant, Chef Ramsay tasted today’s entrees, including classic bolognese tagliatelle.  There was a moment of silence, the classic pause before he described the food as “delicious”. It was relief all around for the Podio’s chefs who had their uniforms signed by the famous three star Chef.

The visit then continued to Tailor Made and the Atelier, where Gordon Ramsay met Amedeo Felisa, Ferrari’s CEO, who showed him the newborn F12berlinetta.

Ferrari Test drive

After his food test came the track test as Ramsay was taken by test driver Raffaele de Simone to the Fiorano circuit. There, the British Chef had the chance to experience 740 HP and the handling of the 12-cylinder F12berlinetta and to sit behind the wheel of a 458 Italia.

It was a busy day for Gordon, who even managed to dedicate some time to a long interview that will be published in the next issue of the Ferrari Official Magazine.

Gordon was asked “What impressed him the most today?”

“The perfection. I work for perfection every day and winning 3 Michelin stars was a dream, but my second biggest dream was having my first Ferrari. From the minute you step inside to the minute you get out of the car and of the Factory you have one word in mind: perfection. I mean perfection 100%, absolutely incredible. And the passion, you can feel the passion in every corner of Ferrari from all the staff: from the stitching, to putting the engine together and to these amazing test drivers. Great day: I’ve had the thrill of a lifetime…Grazie mille…Thank you”.

Ferrari showed the Goodwood Festival of Speed crowds the new 458 Spider this weekend.

Not only could people get up close to this new convertible but they were also shown its tremendous performance and heard the screaming V8 exhaust note as it raced up the hill outside Goodwood House.

The Ferrari 458 Spider

The new mid-rear engined two-seater 458 Spider features a fully retractable aluminium hard-top roof which is a world first for a sports car with this layout. The folding hard-top is 25kg lighter than a traditional soft-top while, according to Ferrari, being both quieter and more thermally efficient  Ferrari have used a very compact folding mechanism that, when raised, provide almost identical lines to the 458 coupe.

Also making its debut was the new lighter and more powerful Ferrari California 30. The front-mid mounted V8 now has 490hp, an addition of 30hp, with overall weight also being reduced by 30kg, which has been achieved through cutting-edge aluminium fabrication techniques and construction technologies.

Alongside these two UK debuts was the Ferrari FF, the V12-powered four-seater flagship of the Ferrari range. This is Ferrari’s first vehicle to feature the innovative 4RM four-wheel drive system which allows up to 30% of the V12’s 660hp engine to be transferred to the front axle in low grip situations.

The 458 Spider, FF and California 30 appeared on the track throughout the weekend where Scuderia Ferrari driver, Marc Gené, put the 2010 Ferrari F10 single-seater Formula One car through its paces up the famous 1.16 mile hillclimb course.

There were also several fine examples of classic Ferraris from the 1950s, 60s and 70s on display at the Festival of Speed, including a very rare 250 MM from 1953, the ex-Carrera Panamerica car still running in its original livery.

The Ferrari F12Berlinetta – the fastest Ferrari ever built

The Ferrari F12Berlinetta – the fastest Ferrari ever built

The first in a new generation of V12 cars has been unveiled by Ferrari.

The on-line unveiling of the F12berlinetta ushers in a new generation of Ferrari 12-cylinders in the form of a car that delivers unprecedented performance from an exceptional new engine, combined with innovative design that redefines classic themes along with extreme aerodynamics.

Revealed to the world for the first time on Ferrari.com in preparation for its official debut at the Geneva International Motor Show, the F12berlinetta, finished in an attractive new Rosso Berlinetta three-layer colour, represents the very cutting-edge of mid-front-engined sports cars.

This is, in fact, the most powerful and high-performance Ferrari road car ever launched thanks to the incredibly efficient engine – in terms of mechanical, combustion and fluid-dynamics efficiency – which, together with advanced vehicle architecture, aerodynamics, components and electronic controls, guarantee unsurpassed driving involvement whatever the road or track.

Ferrari’s traditional transaxle layout has been revolutionised to match the more extreme performance of the car. The wheelbase has been shortened and the engine, dashboard and seats have been lowered in the chassis, while the new layout of the rear suspension and gearbox enabled Ferrari’s engineers to make the rear volume of the car smaller. The overall result is a very compact car with a lower centre of gravity that is further back in the chassis, and a level of aerodynamic efficiency that sets new standards.

Scaglietti, renowned for its expertise in aluminium materials and construction, designed an all-new spaceframe chassis and bodyshell using 12 different kinds of alloys, some of which have been used here for the first time in the automotive sector, and employing new assembly and joining techniques. This has resulted in a 20 per cent increase in structural rigidity while reducing weight to just 1525 kg (70 kg less than the previous V12 coupé) with an ideal distribution between the axles (54 per cent over the rear).

The F12berlinetta’s 6262cc 65° V12 engine delivers unprecedented performance and revs for a naturally-aspirated 12-cylinder. Its maximum power output is 740 CV which translates to a specific output of 118 CV/l. Torque reaches a peak of 690 Nm, 80 per cent of which is already available at just 2,500 rpm, and which provides an unrelenting surge of acceleration all the way to the 8,700 rpm limit. The engine is mated to the F1 dual-clutch transmission, which has closer gear ratios developed specifically for this car’s performance. The F12berlinetta boasts a weight-to-power ratio of just 2.1 kg/CV .

Fuel consumption has been reduced by 30%, with CO2 emissions of just 350 g/km – figures which put the F12berlinetta at the top of the high-performance league. These results have been obtained by extensive research and development which focused on efficiencies of the whole vehicle: engine, aerodynamics, tyres and weights.

Similarly excellent results have been obtained with the car’s aerodynamic development, thanks to the integration of the design process with extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and lengthy testing in the wind tunnel. Downforce has been boosted by 76 per cent (123 kg at 200 km/h) while drag has been significantly reduced (the Cd is just 0.299). These results come courtesy of two new solutions. The first of these is the Aero Bridge which uses the bonnet to generate downforce by channelling air away from the upper part of the car to its flanks where it interacts with the wake from the wheel wells to decrease drag. The second is Active Brake Cooling, a system that opens guide vanes to the brake cooling ducts only at high operating temperatures, again reducing drag.

The F12berlinetta’s impressive technical specifications are completed by Ferrari’s latest generation carbon-ceramic brakes (CCM3) and the evolution of the magnetorheological suspension control system (SCM-E). As is now traditional with all Ferraris, its control systems (E-Diff, ESP Premium, F1-Trac, and high-performance ABS) are all fully integrated.

The result is that the new Prancing Horse 12-cylinder accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.5 seconds. It also completes a lap of the Fiorano circuit in 1’23”, faster than any other Ferrari road car. Benchmark performance and maximum driving involvement are guaranteed by immediate turn-in, with smaller steering wheel angles, and increased cornering speed. Stopping distances have also been drastically reduced.

The design of the F12berlinetta is a result of the collaboration between the Ferrari Styling Centre and Pininfarina and is a perfect balance of uncompromising aerodynamics with harmonious proportions interpreting the typical elements of Ferrari’s front-engined V12 cars in an original and innovative way. A coupé with sleek, aggressive lines whose compact exterior dimensions conceal exceptional in-car space and comfort. The all-new Frau leather interior highlights the balance of advanced technology and sophisticated, handcrafted detailing. In the middle of the light and lean dashboard, there are new carbon fibre and aluminium air vents clearly inspired by the aeronautic field.

The cabin has been optimised to ensure maximum usability of the interior space with additional luggage capacity behind the seats, which can also be easily reached thanks to the large aperture offered by the tail-gate. With the cockpit designed around the driver, typical of all Ferraris, the Human Machine Interface approach is emphasised, grouping all the major commands within immediate reach to guarantee maximum ergonomics for the most involving driving experience.

Geneva Show more power and less weight for Ferrari California

Geneva Show more power and less weight for Ferrari California

The Geneva Motor Show will see the official debut of the new updated version of the Ferrari California. This improved model is already in production and includes a reduction in weight of 30 kg and an increase in power output of 30 CV.

The Ferrari California’s GDI V8 now delivers 490 hp with maximum torque of 505 Nm at 5,000 rpm, thanks to new exhaust manifolds and engine mapping. The torque curve has also been modified and is higher across the engine’s generous rev range.

Cutting-edge aluminium fabrication techniques and construction technologies used by the Scaglietti Centre of Excellence in the manufacture of the Ferrari California’s chassis, have led to an overall reduction of 30 kg in the car’s weight without impinging in any way on its structural rigidity and performance.

These enhancements have improved the Ferrari’s California’s performance, reducing its 0-100 km/acceleration time to 3.8 seconds. This heightens its sporty feel without detracting from the mission and character of a car that has won universal acclaim for its performance and exceptional versatility resulting from its retractable hard top and 2+ seating.

To meet the needs of clients desiring a more dynamic, yet not overly extreme, driving experience, an optional Handling Speciale package has been developed which encompasses modifications to the suspension set-up that minimise body roll and make the car even more responsive to driver inputs.

The Handling Speciale package includes Magnetorheological dampers controlled by an even faster ECU (-50% response time) running patented Ferrari software. The package also features stiffer springs for more precise body control combined with a comfortable ride. Lastly, the California benefits from faster turn-in with smaller steering wheel angles thanks to a new steering box with a 10 per cent quicker steering ratio.

All these new features combine to underscore the California’s sporty prowess without affecting its high-performance grand touring vocation – an achievement very much in line with Ferrari’s DNA.

The technical features are matched by a new, even more extensive choice of colours developed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, including two-tone finishes, three-layer paint technology and modern re-interpretations of classic colour schemes which increase the  exclusive personalisation possibilities even further. In addition, the Ferrari California benefits from the free seven-year standard maintenance programme.

Video: Ferrari FF tries snowy rally stage

What happens when a former World Rally Champion gets behind the wheel of the new Ferrari FF for a challenge on a forest track completely covered in snow?

This exceptional event was captured on camera by Ferrari.com, who followed this very special day for Markku Alen on the Arjeplog track, in Northern Sweden, about 100 km South of the Artic Circle. The track is probably the most challenging surface for Ferrari’s latest 12-cylinder which features an innovative 4RM four-wheel drive system that has fascinated the international press and clients, and was highly praised by Markku, the Finnish ice track specialist and winner of the World Rally Championship in 1978.

At temperatures between -15° and -30° Celsius on the steep inclines and challenging corners of the 14km “Forest” track, Markku Alen was able to test the Ferrari FF to extremes, particularly the car’s traction on surfaces with extremely low grip. Thanks to the perfect weight distribution and the car’s mechanical set up, the Ferrari FF again demonstrated its safety, stability and performance, with Markku commenting that the FF is especially enjoyable to drive, even for a former World Champion.

The Ferrari 458 Grand Am readies for Daytona 24 Hours

The Ferrari 458 Grand Am readies for Daytona 24 Hours

The Ferrari 458 Grand Am has landed! This new racing stock from the stables of Maranello has made it to the USA to prepare for one of the biggest races in the American race calendar.
The 458 Grand Am is stateside to race in the Daytona 24 Hours, which takes place from 26th to 29th January at Florida’s Daytona International Speedway.
Ferrari’s latest racer is derived from the GT3 version of the 458 and has been developed in collaboration with Michelotto. This Ferrari race car is directly aimed to take on the American series and to replicate the dominance of the Maranello marque in 1967. Back then all three steps of the podium were filled by Ferrari drivers. The crews of Lorenzo Bandini-Chris Amon in the Ferrari 330 P4 Spider, Mike ParkesLudovico Scarfiotti in the Ferrari 330 P4 sports car and Pedro Rodriguez-Jean Guichet in the Ferrari 412 P produced an amazing result, thanks to an impeccable strategy thought out by Sporting Director Franco Lini over the last few laps, culminating in the three cars taking the chequered flag in line abreast.
This clean sweep, with a win in the Monza 1000 Kms, second place at Brands Hatch and the Le Mans 24 Hours and a third place at Spa, meant that Ferrari won that year’s International Sports Prototype Constructors’ Championship. Ferrari then had to wait until 1998 to take its next win in the Daytona 24 Hours, thanks to the Team Momo F333 SP which also won that year’s Sebring 2 Hours.
In 2012, it will fall to Scuderia AF Corse, winners of the Le Mans Series, Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and the FIA GT3 championship to try and replicate these American victories.
Its 458 Grand Am will be crewed all year by Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip, North American Rally Champion, Travis Pastrana and two endurance race veterans Rui Aguas and Robert Kauffman who here in Daytona tackle the first of 13 rounds on the busy Grand Am calendar.
