McLaren 570S Coupe unveiled before New York International Auto Show

McLaren 570S Coupe unveiled before New York International Auto Show

McLaren has completed its three tier model strategy with the launch of (the first in its Sports Series family) the McLaren 570S Coupé.  This new sports car, with driver optimised layout and electrifying performance, shares its DNA with the McLaren Super Series and Ultimate Series that sit above it in the range hierarchy. The Sports Series introduces McLaren race-derived technologies and design values to a new segment and audience.

Like every McLaren, the performance of the 570S Coupé is breathtaking. It combines, as its names suggests, a power output of 570PS (562bhp) with light weight construction to give a class leading power-to-weight ratio of 434PS per tonne. The 570S accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds, while 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached in just 9.5 seconds with the pace not letting up till the car reaches a top speed of 328 km/h (204mph).

The Coupé is the first bodystyle to be shown in the Sports Series, highlighting the latest evolution of the McLaren design philosophy.  The ‘shrinkwrapped’, aerodynamically-optimised form will be seen in public for the first time at the 115th New York International Auto Show. The McLaren design team has created a shape of beauty highlighted by details such as the rear flying buttresses that increase downforce as well as adding grace, and complex door tendons that direct additional air to cool the mid-mounted V8 engine.

The Sports Series features an evolution of the 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine, named M838TE, with 30 percent of components bespoke to the new model. Engineered by McLaren, it produces 570PS (562 bhp) at 7,400 rpm, and 600Nm (443 lb ft) of torque at 5,000-6,500 rpm. Power is delivered through a seven-speed SSG transmission, and transferred to the road through the rear wheels. This power is brought under control with standard-fit carbon ceramic brakes, fitted behind a newly designed range of forged alloy wheel options with P Zero™ Corsa tyres as standard from McLaren technical partner, Pirelli – 225/35/R19 on the front and 285/35/R20 on the rear.

McLaren 570S Rear View

The unique carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis has been newly designed with more of a focus on day-to-day usability, offering improved ingress and egress from the cabin. It is incredibly strong and stiff yet weighs less than 80kg, offering optimum levels of protection. This lightweight structure, and the use of aluminium body panels, contributes to a dry weight of as low as 1,313kg (2,895lbs), almost 150kg lighter than its closest competitor.

Minimised weight and a turbocharged engine doesn’t just bring great performance.  The 570S also delivers excellent fuel efficiency and emissions for car that is also a member of the 200mph club, with fuel economy of 25.5mpg on the EU combined cycle, and emissions of 258g/km.  For the US market, this means exemption from gas guzzler tax.

McLaren 570S For The Road And Track

The 570S shows an evolution in the design direction for McLaren, with the McLaren ‘face’ seen on models in the Super Series and Ultimate Series sharpened further. This unique and striking appearance has been designed by air, with a bespoke aerodynamic package including aero blades below the front bumper giving a purposeful stance while channelling clean, cold air through the lower leading edge of the bodywork. Large ultra bright LED headlamps, fitted as standard to all Sports Series models, flank a sculpted bonnet which channels airflow over the front wheelarches. The intricately designed dihedral doors, a McLaren design signature since the iconic F1, possess a three dimensional form including a ‘floating’ door tendon which houses a discreet door button. This unique feature divides the airflow, channelling it into the side intakes and underneath the flying buttresses. This architectural structure ensures drag is minimised along the profile of the 570S, while also optimising levels of cooling and downforce.

Flying buttresses at the rear of the teardrop-shaped glasshouse form part of the aero package, directing air over the shoulderline of the 570S and across the rear deck aiding heat evacuation from the exposed engine bay and increasing downforce. Super-formed aluminium rear fenders ensure clean air is delivered to the fixed rear spoiler, again maximising downforce. The rear of the car is clean and uncluttered, with LED light blade rear lamps which follow the form of the sculpted panels.  The rear of the vehicle features an aluminium mesh allowing effective heat evacuation as well as a view into the engine bay. This sits below a concave rear window, another signature Sports Series Coupé design cue.  The twin exhausts exit below the rear bumper, either side of a newly designed and highly intricate rear diffuser.

The Sports Series has its own newly-developed suspension system ensuring enhanced levels of driver engagement and refinement on both road and track. It uses independent adaptive dampers with front and rear anti-rollbars – distinct from the Super Series –  and dual wishbones, with the set up controlled by the familiar ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ handling settings. In ‘Normal’ mode, the system provides a refined yet engaging ride, while the ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ settings allow the 570S to become more track-focused when required.

The Most Useable McLaren Yet!

Like every McLaren the cabin of the 570S has been designed around the driver, with a clear focus on engagement, visibility, functionality and more than any McLaren before it, day-to-day usability and space. As standard, the sports seats are leather upholstered – racing seats are optional – offering a high level of long distance comfort and support.  The dashboard and steering wheel are also all leather trimmed. Intelligent and ergonomic design within the cabin provides extended stowage space, with the most usable space of any McLaren model to date. This adds to the 150 litres of storage in the front luggage bay.

The McLaren 570S is comprehensively equipped with a full infotainment system including an all new TFT digital instrument cluster that changes configuration according to driving mode, a seven-inch IRIS touchscreen, now with integrated climate control functionality, Bluetooth connectivity and DAB digital / SIRIUS satellite radio (depending on market), mounted on a ‘floating’ centre console. Despite the extensive specification list, weight-saving is still a key focus on the interior and the McLaren Audio four-speaker system ensures the optimal sound quality at the lowest possible weight.

With the Sports Series, an even greater variety of interior customisation is available with a variety of factory available Alcantara®, nappa leather and carbon fibre options. In addition, McLaren designers have created a range of ‘By McLaren’ bespoke interior specifications, similar to those also available on the 675LT, teaming carefully selected colours and materials designed to best showcase the stylish cabin space and co-ordinate with each exterior paint colour. In addition to this, a McLaren Audio Plus 8-Speaker Upgrade System and bespoke Bowers & Wilkins 12-Speaker Premium Audio System with 1280W surround sound upgrade is also available for the ultimate audio experience.

The McLaren 570S will have its global reveal,  on Wednesday 1 April, 2015 at the New York International Auto Show.

McLaren take on Ferrari 458 Spider with 12C Spider folding hard top

McLaren take on Ferrari 458 Spider with 12C Spider folding hard top

The McLaren 12C Spider is looking to take on the new Ferrari 458 Spider as the new car from Woking appears with a folding hard top roof.

Officially announced today, the second model in the MP4-12C range, the 12C Spider, is destined to hit the road in early November with a price tag of £195,500 in the UK.

As the 12C was originally designed as a convertible, its 75kg ‘MonoCell’ requires no additional strengthening for the construction of the 12C Spider. The result is a sports car almost identical to its fixed roof equivalent in performance terms, and weighing only 40kg more with the addition of a convertible roof system.

This new retractable hard top of the 12C Spider is operated using a switch in the lower section of the centre console inside the cabin. The process takes less than 17 seconds to raise or lower and allows, the roof to be operated whilst the 12C Spider is moving at speeds of up to 19mph /30 kph.

Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director said: “I am really excited to announce that the new 12C Spider is now available to order at new McLaren retailers worldwide. The launch of our second model is an exciting milestone in the growth of our company.”

“While the 12C is the technological essence of a race car, the 12C Spider incorporates an additional dimension. 12C Spider owners will love the opportunity to lower the roof and hear the unhindered howl of a V8 twin turbo engine at full throttle. It undoubtedly enhances an already euphoric 12C driving experience.”

“The 12C Spider delivers all the thrills characteristic of a high performance roadster, and yet transforms into a raucous track beast at the flick of a switch. I can’t wait to see it on road and track with customers later this year.”

McLaren 12C Spider

The new convertible is powered by the recently revised 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine producing 625hp and has the same 7 Speed SSG dual-clutch transmission. As with other manufacturers, McLaren has added a glass screen over the engine to show off their powerplant

Vehicle dynamics technology including Brake Steer, ProActive Chassis Control and the unique McLaren Airbrake combine to offer a stable and comfortable driving experience on the the road with race car performance and handling on the track.

Behind driver and passenger sits a rear windscreen which may also be electronically lowered and raised. With the roof lowered this acts as wind deflector to minimise disturbance to the 12C Spider’s occupants. With the roof raised the rear window can be lowered, allowing the exhilarating noise of the 12C Spider’s V8 twin turbo engine to flood the cabin on demand at any time.

With the roof raised the area under the tonneau can be used as an additional luggage area which provides 52 litres of useful storage space.  Bespoke luggage has been designed specifically to fit this space and is supplied as standard with every 12C Spider.

The 12C Spider also features a passive Roll Over Protection System to maximise occupant safety. Each buttress contains a steel structure designed to absorb impact energy and protect both driver and passenger.

Creating one in a million: 12C Spider personalisation highlights

Launched in Volcano Red – one of 17 exterior paint finishes currently available for the 12C and 12C Spider- both 12C derivatives will also be available in optional Volcano Yellow, a striking new high quality paint which features in the ‘Elite’ range of exterior finishes.

Inside, an exclusive new interior trim has been developed for the 2013 model year 12C and new 12C Spider. High quality semi-aniline perforated leather and Alcantara may be selected in a variety of combinations to suit an owner’s personal taste.

A new wheel design, and ‘Diamond Cut’ finishes for existing lightweight and super lightweight forged wheel designs may be selected for the 12C Spider. Standard Silver or Stealth finishes are offered for all wheel designs.

Vehicle Lift will be available as an option on 2013 model year vehicles. The system allows the 12C Spider to be raised front and rear for improved ground clearance. This technology permits the vehicle to be raised by up to 40mm at the front and 25mm at the rear of the 12C Spider, and may remain in position at up to 60kph (37mph).

The Mclaren MP4-12C Spider is here – almost – and Jenson likes it

The Mclaren MP4-12C Spider is here – almost – and Jenson likes it

The new McLaren 12C Spider is here….almost and Jenson Button seems to like the experience.

It is now 12 months since the MP4-12C first went on sale and so it seems the right time for McLaren to launch a new version of their supercar.

This new convertible, the 12C Spider, will provide an exhilarating experience with its 625PS, twin-turbo V8-engined and lowered roof. But don’t take our word for it listen to Formula One World Champion Jenson Button.

McLaren questioned Jenson at last weekend’s European Grand Prix about what speed means to him, the connection he feels with the machine he drives and about what he senses when driving a 300 km/h open top car.  But it might not be his MP4-27 Formula 1 car he is describing, rather the new 12C Spider!

The 12C Spider

The 12C Spider is based on the same super stiff carbon fibre MonoCell chassis as its hardtop sibling the MP4-12C.  With the removal of  the roof the sensations experienced and the noise heard will provide a new increase excitement for both passenger and driver.

McLaren are promising not just a high performance convertible with the 12C Spider but also a car ‘more usable than any car this exciting has a right to be‘. We’ll have to wait and see on the 3rd July when more information is released but if it is anything like the current model we should be in for a treat!

Debut for enhanced 2013 McLaren MP4-12C and GT3 at Goodwood Festival of Speed

Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button will give the enhanced McLaren MP4-12C sports car its World debut drive at Goodwood Festival of Speed this year.

McLaren MP4-12C

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver will take to the famous Goodwood Hill in a Production Prototype version of the revised 12C on Saturday 30th June.  In addition, McLaren GT will unveil a McLaren 12C GT3 race car adorned with a unique livery, which highlights McLaren Group’s support of the ‘GREAT’ campaign launched this year by the Prime Minister’s Office and Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The GREAT campaign is designed to re-affirm Britain’s international reputation and deliver long-term economic benefits through additional tourism, trade and education.

In 2010 McLaren Automotive launched 12C to the Goodwood crowds and last year the 12C GT3 made its public dynamic debut at the event.  For the third year in succession, McLaren will debut an exciting new version of its groundbreaking sports car.

Highlights of the enhanced performance and styling package for the 12C include an engine power upgrade to 625PS (from 600PS), in addition to throttle and gear shift modifications designed to enhance the driving experience.  A range of styling options are now available to order for the new 12C; including a striking Volcano Yellow paint finish, exclusive new interior trim comprising high quality Semi-Aniline perforated Leather and Alcantara and a new Diamond Cut finish available for multiple wheel designs.

The Production Prototype 12C prepared for the Michelin Supercar Run at Goodwood is presented in a stunning Volcano Red exterior colour. It also features the new optional leather interior and will be complete with Lightweight Forged Alloy Wheels in Diamond Cut finish. The new 12C model from McLaren will be available to view up close throughout the event in the Goodwood Supercar Paddock.

GREAT’ 12C GT3

Motorsport fans in the Formula One Paddock at Festival of Speed are invited to visit McLaren GT and see the ‘GREAT’ 12C GT3, which sports a bespoke livery designed by McLaren Racing’s own graphic design team.  Wearing a Union Jack which stretches the length of the car, the ‘GREAT’ 12C GT3 highlights McLaren Group’s support of the GREAT campaign, which was launched in 2012 by the Prime Minister’s Office and Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

McLaren Group is recognised by GREAT for McLaren Racing’s global success in motorsport and the increasing profile of McLaren Automotive worldwide as a leading developer and manufacturer of groundbreaking sports cars.

The GREAT McLaren 12C GT3 will be running in Batch 3 of the Hill programme on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Goodwood Festival of Speed.  Two high profile British guests from the world of entertainment will each experience the 12C road car performance as they join McLaren’s professional racing drivers as passengers in the Michelin Supercar Run at 12.35pm on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

So why did Lewis Hamilton lose his pole position?

So why did Lewis Hamilton lose his pole position?

As I mentioned previously in one of my articles about Saturday’s qualifying session for the Spanish Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton stormed to Pole position but pulled off the circuit almost immediately.  It wasn’t certain whether the former champion ha a technical or mechanical issue but it was suspected that he may have run low or out of fuel.

That seems to have been the case.  Lewis Hamilton will be starting the race from the very back of the grid due to the team being in breach of  article 6.6.2 of the technical regulations (See below).  This relegation means that Pastor Maldonado in his Williams will be starting from Pole position with home town hero Fernando Alonso along side him in his updated Ferrari F2012.

This decision came after much deliberation with the team’s Whitmarsh arguing that he had asked Lewis to pull off at turn 8 to ensure that the FIA had the minimum required fuel for its test.  It is understood that Whitmarsh’s argument was

“It was a technical problem that happened in the garage that didn’t impede the performance of the car in any way. We stopped the car when it had 1.3 litres of fuel left in the car.”

However, this quote comes to me second hand and cannot be verified by myself at this time.

This is what I know for certain.  The technical regulation in question states the following:

6.6.2 : Competitors must ensure that a one litre sample of fuel may be taken from the car at any time during the Event.  Except in cases of force majeure (accepted as such by the stewards of the meeting), if a sample of fuel is required after a practice session the car concerned must have first been driven back to the pits under its own power. *

F1: Nose job for the McLaren MP4-27

F1: Nose job for the McLaren MP4-27

There is a saying that comes to mind at times, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it”.  Of all the cars on the grid that could use a nose job, I would never have pegged the beautiful McLaren MP4-27 as being one of them.

Aside from being the prettiest car on the grid, It’s also one of the quickest and perhaps even the title favorite.  Aside from some bad luck in a couple of races, it has easily been one of the most solid performers.

So why then has McLaren felt the need to give its stunner a nose job?  At the end of the in-season tests earlier this month in Mugello, Italy, McLaren unveiled a revised nose that is noticeably higher than the original.  They have successfully avoided the esthetically unpleasant step that their rivals are sporting.  As mentioned, it’s higher up but now slopes down slightly. In chatting with an F1 journalist who was present at the tests in Mugello, he made the comment that it appeared to be similar to Alain Prost’s nose if straight and somewhat horizontal. Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion I suppose.

The change is said to allow more air to flow underneath the car to improve downforce and allow more air to be channelled as desired.  The gains may be minimal and the drivers are expected to be unaffected.  This may be one of the reasons neither Jenson or Lewis were in Mugello for the tests.

Anyway you slice it, even the slightest gain, is still a gain.  When the title race is this close, a team must take the odd risk, calculated or otherwise…

UK based Formula One teams dominate in 2011

UK based Formula One teams dominate in 2011

The chequered flag has fallen on another FIA Formula One World Championship season and Mark Webber’s victory in yesterday’s Brazilian Grand Prix marked the end of another remarkable premier league campaign for both British drivers and teams.

In total Formula One teams based in the UK won 17/18 of the 19 Grands Prix staged in 2011 with Red Bull Racing (Milton Keynes) winning the coveted Formula One World Championship Constructors title for the second year in succession. What’s more with both Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton sharing six race victories for McLaren (Woking), Britain is also the only nation to boast two Grand Prix winning drivers during the 2011 championship. With the promising Paul di Resta finishing as the highest placed newcomer with Silverstone-based Force India, the year’s top F1 rookie was British, too.

“It’s been another incredible season for British teams and drivers at the highest level,” confirmed Colin Hilton, Chief Executive of the Motor Sports Association (MSA), governing body of UK motor sport.

“These achievements underline the UK’s leading position in global motor sport and act as a tremendous incentive for the next generation of young drivers and engineers. We will continue to celebrate this country’s on-going international success and National Motorsport Week 2012 appropriately features two of Britain’s top motor sport attractions, commencing with the Goodwood Festival of Speed and concluding with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.”

National Motorsport Week (30th June – 8th July 2012) is promoted jointly by the MSA and the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) to highlight the widespread accomplishments and significant benefits of the UK’s world-leading position in both the sport and its related industry.

“Once again ‘Motorsport Valley UK’ can enjoy a really positive end to the year and has every reason to be very proud of the success of ‘our’ F1 teams in 2011,” said Chris Aylett, MIA Chief Executive.

“The DNA of the superb Red Bull (Milton Keynes), McLaren (Woking), Mercedes (Brackley) and Renault (Enstone) F1 programmes links into a network of many highly-skilled people working in the UK for these world-class teams, their engine builders and their vital supply chain. No matter which national anthem is played for the winner, there are many happy engineers in ‘Motorsport Valley’ sharing each success throughout this F1 season… and more young ones itching to get started, too!”

Underlining this country’s long-running success, the history books illustrate how British-based companies have totally dominated Formula One racing, clinching no fewer than 37 Formula One World Championship Constructors’ titles. Even the world famous Ferrari brand has only brought 16 titles to Italy.

The Constructors’ Championship was first awarded to Vanwall in 1958 and since then has been won by no fewer than ten more companies headquartered in this country: Benetton/Renault (1995, 2005, 2006), Brabham (1966, 1967), Brawn (2009), BRM (1962), Cooper (1959, 1960), Lotus (1963, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1978), McLaren (1974, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1998), Red Bull Racing (2010, 2011), Tyrrell (1971) and Williams (1980, 1981, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997).

But, as Hilton pointed out, it’s not just in Formula One that Britain is leading the way. He added: “The top ten finishers on Wales Rally GB, the final round of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship, were also all in cars designed, built and prepared in this country while there were two all-British crews in the top five finishers, too. With further success for Britain in racing and karting series around the world, this has been another outstanding year for the UK at the top level of global motor sport.”

A short movie from McLaren showing the F1 road car and the all new MP4-12C GT3 race car which will be making its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The movie shows some fantastic clips from various McLaren F1 races, showing its success and domination.

Then it is the turn of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton to show what the McLaren MP4-12C can do on the track.
